The United Airlines Historical Foundation Captain William S. Arnott, Scholarship, honors the memory of Captain William S. Arnott, to recognize his enormous contributions to aviation and United Airlines, and to continue his lifelong commitment to promoting interest in, and knowledge of aviation. The scholarship program fulfills Captain Arnott's vision to "Preserve the Past, Inspire the Future".
Two scholarships will be awarded each year in the amount of $1,000 per student.
REQUIREMENTS
UAHF will award one scholarship to a student at Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) in Walnut, California, and one scholarship to a student at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale, Illinois.
The students must be enrolled in an aviation program such as pilot, aircraft maintenance, airline management or another aviation related field. It is reccomended that the student have attained Junior status or is in the final year of a two year program and is maintaining a GPA of 3.0, or higher, on a 4.0 scale. This criteria is for guidance only and the final selection will be at the discretion of the individual school.
It is the desire of the UAHF Scholarship Committee to choose the most qualified candidate and it is felt this selection process will best accomplish that goal.
All recipients are limited to one award and should the student drop out or become otherwise ineligible, the remaining portion of the scholarship may be awarded to another student from the same school.
The two schools mentioned above were chosen because of their outstanding aviation departments and, in addition, Captain Arnott had a close, mentoring relationship with Mt SAC, arranging several, "Classroom in the Sky" flights, for students and faculty, from this school.
The recipients of the 2007-2008 scholarship awards are Ms. Heather Heidinger from SIU and Mr. Jared Carey from Mt. SAC. Both of these young people are outstanding students and are eagerly looking forward to a career in commercial aviation.
