The United Airlines Historical Foundation’s Captain William S. Arnott Scholarship honors the memory of Captain Arnott and gives recognition to his enormous contributions to aviation and United Airlines. It serves to keep alive his lifelong commitment to promoting interest in, and knowledge of aviation. The scholarship program helps fulfill Captain Arnott's vision and the foundation’s mission to ” Inspire the Future”.

Special Mention: The Foundation would like to thank the Retired United Pilots Association (RUPA), who generously funded $1,000 to the UAHF scholarship program in 2009. RUPA has also endorsed a fundraising effort reaching out to its membership to fund another scholarship for the 2010/2011 school year. The Foundation is most grateful for their ongoing support.

REQUIREMENTS

UAHF will award one scholarship to a student at Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) in Walnut, California, and one scholarship to a student at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale, Illinois.

The students must be enrolled in an aviation program such as aviation flight, aircraft maintenance, airline management or another aviation or aerospace related field. It is recommended that the student have attained Junior status or is in the final year of a two year program and is maintaining a GPA of 3.0, or higher, on a 4.0 scale. This criterion is for guidance only and the final selection will be at the discretion of the individual school.

It is the desire of the UAHF Scholarship Committee to choose the most qualified candidate and it is felt this selection process will best accomplish that goal.

All recipients are limited to one award and should the student drop out or become otherwise ineligible, the remaining portion of the scholarship may be awarded to another student from the same school.

The two schools mentioned above were chosen because of their outstanding aviation departments and Captain Arnott had a close, mentoring relationship with both of them. At Mt SAC, Arnott arranged several "Classroom in the Sky" flights for students and faculty where he taught classes on celestial navigation.

The recipients of the 2009/2010 scholarship awards are Geoffrey Wood from Southern Illinois University and Kevin Dummer from Mt. San Antonio College. Both of these young men are outstanding students and are eagerly looking forward to a career in commercial aviation.
